On 27th October, Royal Decree 1493/2011 was published in the Spanish Official State Journal, establishing the mechanisms necessary for the inclusion in the General Social Security System of persons participating in training programs, with the obligation for social security quotas to be paid for those commonly known as interns thereby being formulated.

However, the said obligation does not affect all interns but rather exclusively those who receive some kind of economic compensation, whatever the reason for this or the form in which it may be granted may be, with any parties giving such an economic compensation thereafter being considered as businesses.
